Candidates have from October 5th to November 30th 2009 to apply for the Schlumberger Foundation 2010 Faculty for the Future fellowships.
Faculty for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging economies who are preparing for PhD postdoctoral study in the physical sciences, engineering and related disciplines* to pursue advanced graduate study at top universities in their disciplines abroad.
Launched by the Schlumberger Foundation in 2004, Faculty for the Future has grown to become a community of 110 women from 35 countries.
The long-term goal of the Faculty for the Future program is to generate conditions that result in more women pursuing scientific disciplines. Grant recipients are therefore selected as much for their leadership capabilities as their scientific talents and they are expected to return to their home countries to continue their academic careers and inspire other young women.
Faculty for the Future grants are in the range of USD 25,000 to 50,000 per year, and may be renewed through to completion of studies subject to performance, self-evaluation, and recommendations from supervisors. The amount of the grant depends on the actual costs of study and living in the chosen location.
Candidates should be enrolled or applying to their selected graduate schools when submitting their Faculty for the Future grant request.
Candidates must have a proven track record of teaching experience, demonstrate active participation in faculty life and outreach to encourage young women into the sciences and hold an excellent academic record.
The online application form will be available as of October 5th, 2009.
Sample versions of new forms are now available for consultation at the link below so candidates can start preparing their application content.
Further information about the Faculty for the Future fellowship program can also be found at www.foundation.slb.com/fftf

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
CONFERENCE RESULTS:
The international conference “Changing research landscapes to make the most of human potential –
10 years of EU activities on Women in Science, and BEYOND” organised in collaboration with the
Czech EU Presidency in Prague on 14 and 15 May 2009, was attended by some 320 persons coming

researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders.
The presentations as well as the conference conclusions are available at the following website:
To further promote gender equality in scientific research within the 7th Framework Programme, the
European Commission’s Research DG has decided to develop a gender toolkit and training activities
which will provide the research community with practical tools to integrate gender aspects into FP7
research.
The leaflet is available at: http://www.yellowwindow.be/genderinresearch/
Before the training activities begin, four half-day information seminars on the project are scheduled
to take place in Brussels between June and November 2009. These information seminars follow a
dynamic format: short presentations (max 45 min) on the toolkit alternating with glimpses into the
actual training sessions in different fields are run through the afternoon.
First half-day information session, 24/06/2009 from 13.00 to 17.00.
Second half-day information session, 11/09/2009 from 11.00 to 15.00.

Europe.
COMMISSION CALLED FOR “EQUALITY BETWEEN WOMEN AND MEN IN A TIME OF CHANGE”
On 15 and 16 June, the European Commission hosted an event in Brussels to discuss current
challenges and map future strategies for gender equality in Europe.
The conference on “Equality between women and men in a time of change” was an opportunity to
take stock of the achievements of the current EU Roadmap on equality between women and men,
coming to an end next year, and to discuss future priorities. With overall unemployment rising and
no immediate solution to the current recession, the debate focused also on the repercussions of the
economic crisis on gender equality. This two-day event featured speeches by ministers from the
Czech Republic, Spain, Austria and the United Kingdom, Commissioner Spidla and Commissioner
Wallström, EU representatives, European social partners, experts as well as NGOs.
The conference discussed how to make further progress for gender equality in a time of change.
Shared efforts over recent years have helped reduce gender inequalities across Europe, particularly
in female employment. But overall progress is still too slow in most areas and gender equality is far
from being achieved. Women still predominate in less valued jobs and sectors; they are on average
paid less than men and they occupy fewer positions of responsibility.

2nd International PROMETEA Conference:
“The scientific and technological careers of women and men
Private temporalities, professional temporalities; public and corporate policies”
November 26-27, 2009
Maison de l’UNESCO, Paris (France)
In the wake of the 2007 International PROMETEA conference, the participants expressed the desire
to reflect on the question of the scientific and technological careers of women and to pursue the
dialogue between Human and Social Sciences on the one hand, and the preoccupations and reality
of corporate life on the other hand.
The 2009 Prometea conference will attempt to meet this demand:
v To create opportunities of exchange between researchers in HSS and corporate managers
v To take stock of the situation of women in these jobs and evaluate the impact of public
policies and of new corporate practices on their careers: more flexibility, development of
teleworking, blurring of the border line between private life and work, gender-neutral
parental leaves, day care services etc.
v To encourage the emergence of new social models better adapted to the reality of
contemporary social life. Also to consider new paths for men in order to make all jobs and
functions equally accessible to women and men
Conference languages are English and French.
This conference is organised in the framework of the European network Prometea, by the CDEFI
(Conference of the Heads of French Engineering Schools) and ECEPIE (Equality of opportunities in
engineering careers in Europe) with the support of the European Commission and French
institutions.

She Figures 2009, leaflet, presenting some preliminary results of the She Figures 2009 data
collection. The She Figures 2009 booklet will be published in September 2009 and uploaded on the
DG Research Women in Science website.
This 2-days workshop will be held as a week-end event on August 22-23 and will be immediately followed by the Introductory Workshop, August 24-28. Its aim on the one hand is to introduce advanced graduate students and postdocs to Tropical Geometry. On the other hand, it is supposed to provide a platform for interaction that is particularly tailored to women in the early stages of their careers in mathematics. There will be two short-courses of 2x 1h-lectures by Hannah Markwig and Federico Ardila, a number of research talks by prominent women in the field and a panel discussion on career issues of female mathematicians. As an important activity of the workshop, we plan for a session of (very) short contributions by participants, consisting of focused two to three slides each. We strongly encourage participants of all levels to send an abstract to us by email along with completing their registration. We would be very happy to see you at MSRI for this workshop! Also, please help us circulate this information and forward it in particular to female graduate students and postdocs. There is limited funding available for travel and lodging expenses and female researchers will be given priority for support. The application deadline for funding is Monday, June 15, 2009. Registration will be open until the workshop starts. We are looking forward to an inspiring week-end in the beginning of the tropical semester at MSRI!
We are seeking to appoint someone with expertise in Analysis, which is to be interpreted broadly, so including Applied Analysis, Complex Analysis, Numerical Analysis and Stochastic Analysis.
At present there is one lectureship advertised, however we expect that a second lectureship will also be approved shortly, also with expertise in Analysis. I would be grateful if you could bring this to the attention of anyone who might be interested.

Researchers from abroad are invited to apply for a post-doctoral or senior research grant in a public laboratory in Paris. Supporting research across all disciplines is one of the City of Paris’ priorities. Read about the invitation for online applications at Paris.fr.
Strengthening the international scientific appeal of the capital is a policy priority for the city council. Since 2003, the City of Paris has been offering a selective programme for post-doctoral and senior researchers from abroad, enabling public laboratories in Paris to reinforce their collaborative work with other major cities.
Jean-Louis Missika, Deputy Mayor responsible for Innovation, Research and Universities states: “207 researchers have already come to Paris as a result of this scheme. Given the success of this programme and the absolute requirement to invest in the knowledge economy, I would like the city to make an even larger contribution by doubling its annual budget to 1.75 million euros, which represents approximately 80 grants per year”.
All disciplines are eligible
Researchers from all disciplines are eligible. The scientific excellence of their application (applicant – project – host laboratory) is the main selection criterion for the experts on the City of Paris Scientific Committee responsible for considering the applications.
