Why the percentages of female mathematicians vary so much in Europe

Filed under: Statistics — Dusanka Perisic @ 1:20 pm

The UPGEM project finds that problems of retaining competent
researchers in academia can be related to problems of perceived
stereotypes and gender categories which hinder especially female
researchers in reaching the top.

European Level Organisations for Women Mathematicians

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dusanka Perisic @ 11:49 am

There are several organisations and committees supporting women mathematicians in Europe. The first is the membership organisation European Women in Mathematics (EWM), http://www.math.helsinki.fi/EWM/. Founded in 1986, EWM has several hundred members in over 30 European countries. Its executive consists of a convenor, currently Frances Kirwan, Oxford, UK (Marie-Fran\c{c} ois Coste Roy, Rennes from January 2010) and a standing committee. EWM holds a biennial scientific meeting and general conference: recent meetings have been in Cambridge, UK (2007) and Novi Sad, Serbia (2009), and the next will be in CRM Barcelona, Spain (2011). EWM also sponsors or coorganises various interim meetings and other activities, for example the ICM satellite meeting ICWM 2010 Hyderabad, http://www.icm2010.org.in/docs/ICWM2010.pdf. EWM is independent from, but has links to, its sister organisation the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) based in the United States. It also has close links to various national level organisations, for example Femmes et Math\’ematiques in France.

The second organisation is the European Mathematical Society’s Women and Mathematics Committee (http://www.euro-math-soc.eu/comm-women.html), currently chaired by Sylvie Paycha, Clermont-Ferrand ( Du\v{s}anka Peri\v{s}i\’c, Novi Sad from January 2010). The function of this committee is to undertake any actions which will help or promote women mathematicians in Europe. Past activities have included gathering statistics on the numbers of women in different countries and setting up a blog for women mathematicians, see http://womenandmath.wordpress.com/ Currently the committee is exploring possible further collaboration with both EWM and with the European Research Institutes on Mathematics (ERCOM).

Finally, in 2008, EWM and the EMS Women in Maths Committee jointly set up the EWM/EMS Scientific Committee, http://womenandmath.wordpress.com/ emsewm-scientific-committee/ The members of this committee are twelve distinguished women mathematicians, including Dusa McDuff, Nina Uraltseva and Mich{\`e}le Vergne. Currently chaired by Ulrike Tillmann (Oxford), the main function of this committee is to advise on scientific programmes and speakers for EWM and other related events.

sDetailsCallPage&call_id=271
<http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/dc/index.cfm?fuseaction=UserSite.Capaciti
esDetailsCallPage&call_id=271

We would like to draw your attention on some specific topics:

1. SiS 2010 – 1-0-1 Mobilisation and Mutual Learning Actions which is
designed to support multi-annual partnerships between different types
of actors (research organisations, universities, civil society
organisations, science centres, public authorities, etc) on issues of
common interest where science is at stake (sustainable development,
health, transport, social issues, etc), with special attention to
science in society themes (education, governance, ethics, gender,
scientific culture and communication).

2. SiS-2010-2.1.3-1 Women in Science: Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation
which is designed to build on the theme of gender equality in science.
The research to be implemented under this action will bring a
significant contribution to the understanding of the situation of
women in science in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco,
Palestinian-administered areas, Syrian Arab Republic, and Tunisia. It
will be important to take into account cultural diversities and
traditions to analyse how all these countries are addressing this issue.

Funding scheme: Collaborative Project for Specific International
Cooperation Actions (SICAs) dedicated to international cooperation
partner countries

3. SiS-2010-2.1.1-1 Implementing structural change in research
organisations/ universities designed to support groups of research
organisations/universities that will cooperate on common actions in
order to implement the best systemic organizational approaches to
increase the participation and career advancement of women
researchers.

The deadline for the submission of proposals is the 21 January 2010.

Call for Applications for the 2010 Faculty for the Future Fellowships

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dusanka Perisic @ 12:18 pm

Candidates have from October 5th to November 30th 2009 to apply for the Schlumberger Foundation 2010 Faculty for the Future fellowships.

Faculty for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging economies who are preparing for PhD postdoctoral study in the physical sciences, engineering and related disciplines* to pursue advanced graduate study at top universities in their disciplines abroad.

Launched by the Schlumberger Foundation in 2004, Faculty for the Future has grown to become a community of 110 women from 35 countries.

The long-term goal of the Faculty for the Future program is to generate conditions that result in more women pursuing scientific disciplines. Grant recipients are therefore selected as much for their leadership capabilities as their scientific talents and they are expected to return to their home countries to continue their academic careers and inspire other young women.

Faculty for the Future grants are in the range of USD 25,000 to 50,000 per year, and may be renewed through to completion of studies subject to performance, self-evaluation, and recommendations from supervisors. The amount of the grant depends on the actual costs of study and living in the chosen location.

Candidates should be enrolled or applying to their selected graduate schools when submitting their Faculty for the Future grant request.

Candidates must have a proven track record of teaching experience, demonstrate active participation in faculty life and outreach to encourage young women into the sciences and hold an excellent academic record.

The online application form will be available as of October 5th, 2009.

Sample versions of new forms are now available for consultation at the link below so candidates can start preparing their application content.

Further information about the Faculty for the Future fellowship program can also be found at www.foundation.slb.com/fftf

Call for applications poster is available for download for your notice boards.

*Awards in biological sciences are limited.
